Brazil| Former Health Ministers testify at the COVID investigation held in the Senate

This week, in What’s Happening in Brazil, we take a look at the COVID-19 investigation held in the Senate to determine if there has been mismanagement of the pandemic. As former health ministers Luís Henrique Mandetta and Nelson Teich’s depositions point to their progressively diminished autonomy in handling the pandemic, Bolsonaro and his sons face greater questionings.

We also discuss the agenda of privatizations and the government’s quest for the denationalization of the post office amid the pandemic and its growing economic and social effects on workers. Finally, we talk about the murder of LGBT and land reform activist Lindolfo Kosmaski, in southern Brazil.

In our Culture Talk segment, we introduce you to the documentary The last forest. Shot in a village in the Amazon, the film conveys the worldview of the Yanomami, resulting in a unique and original motion picture that was a hit at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Finally, in Brazilianism, we will teach you a delightful classic dessert and some culinary tricks, and wrap things up with a Brazilian singer’s innovative approach. Enjoy!
